After School Excellence Program
The After School Excellence Program is open to students ages 5-18, regardless of skill and/or hockey experience. Practices are typically 45-60 minutes long and are held in the evenings between the hours of 3:30pm – 8:00pm. Sessions are split into the following categories based on age and experience/skill:
- SPARKS Practices - SPARKS is the foundation of our on-ice and off-ice programming, targeted at beginners who do not know how to skate. While learning to skate, SPARKS students explore healthy habits, character development, and the importance of education. In combining educational resources and age-appropriate developmental models within a safe and fun environment for physical activity, our goal is to turn short bursts of energy and insight into an intense passion for hockey and learning. Students need 10 ice touches to complete SPARKS, which typically spans over the course of five weeks. Practices usually take place from 4:30-5:30 at most rinks. Upon graduation from SPARKS, students receive a certificate of completion, their own hockey stick, and their own Snider Hockey jersey. Spark a passion for learning - on the ice, in the classroom, and in your life!
- Learn to Play Practices – Once students have graduated from our SPARKS program, they move on to our Learn to Play Program. During these practices, students learn the rules of hockey.
- Mite, Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam, and High School Practices – Sessions geared towards our older/experienced students with emphasis on skill development and small games. Students in these groups will play games versus students from other Snider Hockey rinks from Fall to Spring.
School Day Program
Snider Hockey has partnered with a number of Philadelphia-area schools to offer its School Day Program to students as part of their physical education curricula. Snider Hockey will either have students learn floor hockey or have students come to the rink to receive instruction. At the conclusion of the school day program, students are offered the opportunity to continue playing hockey by joining Snider Hockey’s After School Excellence Programs at their local rink.
In addition to the co-ed Delaware Valley Hockey League, Snider Hockey has girls-only travel teams. Girls’ Teams include 10U, 12U, 14U, 19U, and an Independent Girls’ Team. Each team plays about 15 games per season and participates in one tournament. Girls who play on Snider Hockey Girls’ Travel Teams have developed their skills in Snider Hockey’s After School Excellence Program.
All Snider Hockey League teams are composed of boys and girls, but each rink holds girls-only practices weekly. These practices give girls the opportunity to develop their skills with other girls in a comfortable and encouraging environment.
Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL) Travel Teams
Snider Hockey fields multiple travel hockey teams that compete in the DVHL each season from September to March. Age groups include: Squirt, Peewee, Bantam, Midget U-16, and Midget U-18. Each team travels locally and participates in approximately 20 games per season, in addition to various tournaments. DVHL teams are comprised of players that have developed their skills in the After School Excellence Program.
Snider Hockey holds multiple summer camps each year. These camps are intended to be a reward for regular participation in the year-round After School Excellence Program. Camps are typically one week long, and operate from 9 AM – 4:30 PM. In addition to playing ice hockey, campers participate in dryland training exercises, academic activities, outdoor games, off-ice hockey drills and life skills education sessions.
